Water Supply

Gujarat has been facing acute drinking water scarcity due to recurrent droughts, low rainfall and skewed distribution pattern. Almost two-third of the state had either been facing water availability issues or quality problems. Government of Gujarat focused attention to provide long term solutions by investing in water supply infrastructure based on sustainable surface sources to achieve water security. Rural water supply schemes are being formulated and implemented through various programmes which are briefed below :

Activities of water supply schemes are done by 3 agencies – (1) GWSSB (2) GWIL and (3) WASMO

Rural Water Supply Programme

The motive of Rural Water Supply Programme is to provide regular safe and adequate water for drinking and other house hold purposes to every citizen of Gujarat covering General, Scheduled Tribal and Scheduled Caste population in the State through various means like Hand pump, Individual water supply schemes, Regional/group water supply schemes, Mini programs based on electric or solar energy, Internal distribution water supply scheme, Recharging of underground sources and roof top rain water tanks.

Urban Water Supply

Urban Development Department (GUDM) has assigned Urban Water Supply projects for 23 cities to Gujarat Water Supply & Sewerage Board which are taken up for execution. Out of these 5 projects have been completed and commissioned.
